Legislative Session Faces Busy Agenda.(Editorial Page)


They come from all reaches of the sprawling state. Ranchers, bankers, lawyers, teachers, small businesspersons citizen lawmakers come from all walks of life. The New Mexico Legislature goes into session today.

The 112 men and women face a long session this year, 60 days of hard work on issues ranging from schools to spending, from gambling to electricity deregulation, from economic development to tax cuts.

The state is blessed with an embarrassment of riches: A general fund revenue increase in excess of $400 million is expected next fiscal year, due primarily to oil and gas prices. The state also faces an embarrassment of unmet needs; school construction, teachers salaries and the health-care network top the list. …
