The New Mexico Personnel Office's Internet job listings were singled out as the most important advance in state recruitment procedures adopted since 1997, according to a December legislative audit report.

The Personnel Office helps state agencies fill 4,500 jobs a year, collecting about 120,000 applications a year and ranking candidates for each job.

Applicants have long been able to browse through vacancy lists at Department of Labor offices across the state.

Starting about two years ago, the Personnel Office Web site made those lists available at any computer with Internet access. …
