B. Ruppe Drugs competes by returning to the herbal remedies it began with

B. Ruppe Drugs in Barelas, one of the oldest continuously operating stores in New Mexico, is still in business, but it has its back against the "wal"s of modern capitalism as in mega-corporate retailers such as Wal-Mart and Walgreens.

"Mr. Bernard Ruppe opened it in Old Town in 1883, and I believe it's been around longer than anybody. I know it's only been owned by two other people since he opened it," said Maclovia Zamora, a co-owner who joined the business 20 years ago.

Today the store is in the heart of Barelas, at 807 4th St. SW, just south of Downtown Albuquerque.

In the face of corporate competitors often credited with drastically reducing the numbers of independent, family-owned corner drugstores, B. Ruppe just keeps on going.

Zamora attributes the store's resiliency to Mother Nature. Call it an alternative form of drugstore survival. …
