Police Should Vary Checkpoints.(Opinion)

In the view of two city councilors, Santa Fe police have organized their DWI checkpoints over the past two years in a very unfair way.

All of the nine DWI checkpoints have been in Santa Fe's southwest quadrant, between St. Francis and Airport Road. To make matters worse, six of the nine checkpoints were in the same location, on Agua Fria just west of Osage.

Councilors Jimmie Martinez and Frank Montano say that locating the checkpoints in an area that also has "a concentrated population" of Hispanics and poor is discriminatory.

"DWI is a problem that knows no ethnicity, and the checkpoints ought to be spread out throughout town," Montano says. …
