Chess clubs for kids expand as more get interested in the brain-building game of patterns and patience

After the opponents shook hands, the room fell quiet. The clicking of warring knights, rooks and bishops correlated with the furrowed brows on more than 200 tiny faces.

"It's amazing seeing this many kids sitting quietly and concentrating," Northern Schools Chess League director Bob Robey said. "It does improve their schooling and their test scores, in reading, math and critical thinking. It's good, especially for hyperactive young kids."

The elementary school students 20 of them kindergartners packed the Chaparral Elementary School gymnasium Saturday in Santa Fe for the league's finals. …
