Advisory issued on stolen Native American artifacts.(Arts & Culture)

The theft of an undetermined number of Native American artifacts from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin's museum collection has prompted the society to issue an advisory concerning the theft, said director George L. Vogt.

Vogt said he hopes the advisory will alert unsuspecting buyers of the potential presence of stolen artifacts in markets frequented by collectors of such materials and also aid in the recovery of the items.

David L. Wooley, a former curator of anthropology for the society's museum, has been charged with 22 counts of theft of movable property in connection with the case.

"The society's museum staff is working diligently to determine precisely how many artifacts may have been taken, and is cooperating fully with the Wisconsin Capitol Police and the Dane County District Attorney's Office to ensure that the case is prosecuted appropriately," Vogt said. …
