New Mexico artists, groups get NEA grants.(Arts & Culture)

Nine New Mexico arts organizations and individuals netted more than $150,000 in National Endowment for the Arts grants, according to information released this week.

That compares to $202,000 in grants received by state applicants at the same time last year.

The Santa Fe Opera topped the list with $60,000 in what is the first of three rounds of NEA funding for 2001.

The grant is to support the commissioning of three full-length operas by American composers from this year to 2003.

Two of the composers are Bright Sheng and Aaron Jay Kernis. A third is to be named later.

Other groups receiving grants include:

*Opera Southwest (Albuquerque): $5,000 to support the premiere of the opera "Mirage" by Santa Fe (James) Galloway. …
