* Candidate believes in tailoring music for diverse audiences

Karen Lynne Deal has two overlapping jobs this season. It's her ninth and final year as associate conductor of the Nashville Symphony and her first season as music director/conductor of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra.

In Nashville, Deal won praise for creating programs that bring in new audiences and make symphonic music more accessible to the public.

Deal said she developed concert programs and community initiatives that doubled and sometimes tripled attendance and public participation.

She's been responsible for bringing in schoolchildren and families to not only hear the Nashville Symphony but also the opera and the ballet.

In Springfield, Ill., she hasn't missed a beat.

"I have proven success in one city. Now I'm able to build on that and develop it all over again in another city (Springfield) with different resources," Deal said in a phone interview.

Deal is one of nine candidates for music director of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. …
