The New Mexico Flames aren't stretching it when they say they're a traveling ice hockey team.

The 7- to 11-year-old Flames, who compete in the mites and squirts divisions, have several players who live as far away as Taos and the Alamogordo area and still travel to Rio Rancho's Iceoplex for practices up to twice a week.

"A good level of commitment comes from the kids," says Flames coach Bob Pope. "But it's the parents that it's difficult for. It's the parents that have to dig deep."

Shiela Weehunt says she's willing to make the bi-weekly, 400-mile round trip between La Luz north of Alamogordo and Rio Rancho so her son, 10-year-old Arren, can play on a competitive team. …
