Pitts, Augustson Help Rio Rancho Push Past La Cueva in Joe Vivian Tourney.(Sports)

Rio Rancho edged runner-up La Cueva 148-142 to take the 23-team Albuquerque High/Joe Vivian Wrestling Classic on Saturday.

"I knew it was going to be a transition year," said Dennis Friedland, Rio Rancho's first-year coach, who led La Cueva last season. "But we're getting better every week. We took first despite losing seven or eight 1-point matches."

The winning Rams were paced by Brian Pitts and Nathaniel Augustson.

Pitts pinned La Cueva's Rion Marcus at the 2:35 mark in the 125-pound finals. Augustson got the fall over Las Cruces' Carlos Valles at 1:56 in the 160-pound division.

Rio Rancho also got a third-place finish from Paul Reichbach at 135. …
