UNM Frustrates Patient Falcons, Takes MWC Victory

After flirting with disaster for much of the night, the University of New Mexico men's basketball team again responded to adversity and held off Air Force 59-52 Saturday night at the Pit.

UNM, which has seen its starting lineup scrambled repeatedly this season for a variety of reasons, this time played without senior Wayland White who was attending his uncle's funeral in Mississippi.

It's likely that the athletic White would have made a huge impact against the Falcons, but the Lobos were able to survive without him anyway in the Mountain West Conference affair.

The Lobos (12-2, 2-0) struggled from the free-throw line a recurring theme of late but so did the Falcons (5-10, 0-2). New Mexico had a number of chances to put it out of reach from the line, while the Falcons had similar opportunities to draw even closer.

"Other than the free throws, I thought we played a tremendous game," said UNM coach Fran Fraschilla. "Without Wayland here, and against that team, it was a very good win for us. …
