Republican To Challenge Aragon for Top Senate Post.(Editorial Page)(Column)

SANTA FE Albuquerque Republican Joseph Carraro plans to challenge Democrat Manny Aragon for the top leadership job in the Senate when lawmakers convene at the Capitol on Tuesday for their 60-day session.

"I'm running," Carraro said. "I have 18 Republicans that are definitely voting for me. A few Democrats are considering it. What it comes down to is we have a chance for change."

Carraro's bid to become Senate president pro tem, though probably quixotic, could make for some interesting opening day fireworks between the two Albuquerque lawmakers. Republicans already are riled up over a plan by Democrats, who control the chamber, to change Senate rules.

The president pro tem position, which Aragon has held since 1988, is voted on by the 42-member Senate. Senate Democrats, who lost one seat in the November election, will outnumber Republicans 24-18 in the upcoming session. …
