Beaver Problems Handled Humanely.

It was something of a surprise the other night to see a fat beaver among wildlife visitors to the Larry King Show on television. No less surprising was it to realize that these 40- and 50-pound water engineers are native to parts of New Mexico.

Sunny, arid New Mexico? Yep, beavers thrive on the drainage canals of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District between the town of Bernalillo and Isleta Pueblo.

Beavers build dams, you recall, erecting behind them impressive midstream mud and stick mounds with safe underwater entrances where they live. The dams create quiet refuges for beaver families and cool habitat for fish and other stream dwellers. …
