District's 5.7% Rate Lowest Since 1980s

Bernalillo Public Schools' dropout rate fell to 5.7 percent last year, its lowest in decades, district figures show.

"Teachers communicate more to (students)," said assistant superintendent Patrick Lopez, who is also the acting Bernalillo High School principal. "Teachers are talking to them."

Bernalillo's dropout rate fell from 7.1 percent in the 1998-99 school year and from 10.8 percent in the 1997-98 school year.

The state average for the 1998-99 school year was 7 percent, state records show.

State law says students not in school for 10 consecutive days are dropped. …
