SANTA FE Gov. Gary Johnson will be among the amateur ski racers trying to beat Olympic champion Alberto Tomba today in a charity event at Taos Ski Valley.

Johnson, an avid skier who competes each season in the Corporate Cup races around New Mexico, is realistic about his chances of upsetting the Italian great.

"I will be so bold as to bet that no one beats Alberto Tomba," Johnson, an accomplished triathlete, said in an interview Friday. "I will be so bold as to say I won't be second, either."

Tomba, who competed in three Olympics, won three gold medals, two of them in the 1988 Calgary Olympics, where he came in first in the slalom and giant slalom events. …
