Johnson: Voucher Support Growing

SANTA FE Gov. Gary Johnson said Friday that school vouchers are a good idea even if offering them to parents meant some public schools would close.

Johnson has proposed giving parents vouchers worth an average of $5,200 per student to defray the cost of their children's education at public, private or religious schools.

The Legislature has rejected other voucher proposals from Johnson in previous years.

When asked during a Capitol news conference whether vouchers would lead to the closing of some public schools, Johnson responded, "Wouldn't that be wonderful? …
