Union Head Sees Chance for Teacher Pay Raises.(Metropolitan)

Teachers should lead the charge to improve education by policing their own profession better, the president of the nation's largest teachers union said Friday.

Bob Chase, once a Connecticut social studies teacher, is midway through his second term leading the National Education Association. In a speech to NEA leaders from across the region, Chase said the union needs to focus on getting more help for new teachers, from mentors to smaller classes to better training programs.

He also said that increasingly professional work by teachers would help convince the public and politicians that now is the time for major pay increases. …
