Snowstorm Leaves Its Mark Across N.M. Roads.(Metro & New Mexico)

A fast-moving California storm zipped through Arizona and hit New Mexico on Friday afternoon, dumping snow and rain across the state and causing snow-packed, icy conditions and whiteouts on several state highways.

No major collisions were reported by law enforcement agencies.

"I'd recommend that people planning to travel through any mountain passes on Saturday be prepared with snow tires or chains just to be winter-prepared," said Kurt Vanspeybroeck, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

State police closed about a 100-mile stretch of N.M. 44/550 from Bernalillo northwest to Bloomfield, allowing only vehicles with chains on their tires to pass because heavy snowfall had created poor visibility. …
