Downs Making a Huge Splash With Army.(Sports)

The wave of swimming honors keeps accumulating at West Point for Dan Downs, one of the finest student-athletes ever to attend Albuquerque Academy.

The 6-foot, 6-inch, 185-pound sophomore, a 1999 Academy graduate, has 11 individual first-place finishes and three more firsts in relays this season for Army, which has a 4-4 overall record.

Downs set a school record Dec. 9 against Princeton with a 200-yard breaststroke time of 2:02.50. His other top efforts this season have been: 1:51.25 in the 200 individual medley Dec. 1 against Navy; 4:07.66 in the 400 IM during the Nov. 10-11 USMA Invitational; 1:43.89 in the 200 freestyle Nov. 17 against Harvard and Columbia; 9:50.05 in the 1,000 free Oct. 24 against Stony Brook; and 57.18 seconds in the 100 breast against Princeton.

In the Army invite, Downs accounted for 34 points in the four-team field, winning three individual races, swimming the leadoff leg in the victorious 200 free relay (1:25.68) and taking second in the 100 breast.

Those numbers aside, Downs' most impressive achievement this season was being named in December to the 20-member Patriot League All-Decade Men's Swimming and Diving Team. Downs made quite a splash in his first PL championship meet last winter, becoming only the second freshman to capture men's Swimmer of the Meet accolades after winning the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM. …
