Rams Are Rewarded for Patience.(Sports)

RIO RANCHO Patience and some good free-throw shooting paid off handsomely for the Rio Rancho boys basketball team Friday night as the Rams knocked off visiting Manzano 64-56.

Joel Lund and Preston Wilhite contributed 18 points apiece for Rio Rancho (4-8), which built a comfortable lead by patiently working the ball around the perimeter until its offense created a good shot.

"That's our game, and you'll see it for the rest of the season," Rams coach Rick Sleeter said. "We want to make people play defense for as long as possible, and these kids have bought into that idea."

After five ties, Rio Rancho took the lead for good in the second quarter. Lund scored six points in the paint, and Wilhite knocked in a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to give the Rams a 25-19 lead.

The margin reached 34-24 in the third quarter before Manzano (5-7) made a brief push early in the fourth. A steal and dunk by Anthony Fuller trimmed the deficit to 39-34, but Fuller later picked up a costly technical his fifth foul of the game. …
