On Monday the nation celebrates the birth of an American hero and martyr, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

This is the 15th year the United States has marked King's life with a holiday, and this year it has special significance because the Monday holiday actually falls on the birthday anniversary of the slain civil rights leader, Jan. 15, 1929. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn.

King struggled to end social injustice by attempting to transform the American heart through persuasion and non-violent demonstration.

His speeches were powerful calls for justice and exclamations of his belief that one must never lose hope that the better side of human nature would eventually surface and prevail. …
