Economic Concerns Of N.M. Ranchers Omitted

Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt on Friday shot down new grazing standards that would have taken into account New Mexico ranchers' economic needs on Bureau of Land Management grazing allotments.

Babbitt signed the new grazing standards and guidelines for New Mexico, but removed a proposal to consider the "human dimension," which would have boiled down to consideration of dollars and cents for ranchers and rural communities.

Lt. Gov. Walter Bradley, who helped develop the guidelines, vowed to appeal the decision.

"We're not going to let it stand," he said.

The proposal to consider economic, social and cultural implications in BLM grazing decisions attracted national attention as the first of its kind in the United States. …
