Wednesday evening the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum initiated its music program with a stunning recital of 20th-century works by the Japanese pianist Aki Takahashi. Rich in power and poetry, the concert vividly demonstrated the sense of adventure that characterized American composers in the first half of the past century.

Held in the main gallery of the museum, the program underscored the fact that explosions were taking place musically as well as artistically in this country. A new babe, modernism, was being born and it would radically change perceptions in all the creative fields. …
