When Austin, Texas' Vallejo signed on with Emilio Estefan's Crescent Moon label, you knew the band would be able to spread its funky, bilingual rock to a greater audience, but might pay for it by having its sound made generic.

While the sterilization of Vallejo's sound isn't complete, the group's third CD, "Into the New" (Epic/Crescent Moon) isn't as much of a step forward as it should be. Rather, the group treads some water musically while surrendering some of the edge it possessed on its first two albums.

"Into the New" isn't all bad. The title track has some real moments and the group's hip-hop experimentations continue to get better, but overall there's a sense that the band was encouraged to play it safe. …
