Award shows give credence to rapper.(Nightlife)

It's that time of year again: music award season. Grammy nominations were announced last week and Monday night the American Music Awards filled a couple of hours of prime-time television that would've otherwise been filled by pro sports.

The AMAs proved two things. One, all awards shows are plastic, self-indulgent, self-congratulatory wastes of time. And two, Britney Spears has a promising post-musical future as Vanna White's replacement on "Wheel of Fortune."

The big controversy leading into awards season was rapper Eminem's multiple Grammy nominations for "The Marshall Mathers LP."

The controversy, of course, comes from the fact that Eminem's lyrics are among the most hate-filled, spiteful barrages of bile ever captured on tape. …
