Austin band reaches back for new Americana gothic.(Music)

Austin, Texas' Knife in the Water may sound like an alternative country band, but don't mention that to Aaron Blount.

The vocalist/guitarist doesn't have much faith in that musical movement.

"We were aware of that current, but we all felt outside of it," he said recently.

He singled out Uncle Tupelo, the band thought largely responsible for the alt-country genre.

"Uncle Tupelo looks like a frat-rock thing here (in Austin)," Blount said.

He and his bandmates, organ player/vocalist Laura Kause, pedal steel player Bill McCullough, bassist Mark Nathan and drummer Cisco Ryder, came together three years ago and quickly began amassing a following not only among Austin's dedicated music fans but also among its many musicians. …
