Detoxification Unit Plan Junked.

St. Vincent Hospital has scrapped plans for a 10-bed drug detoxification unit as part of cutbacks to prevent a financial shortfall at the not-for-profit hospital.

But the hospital has hired Dr. Fred Kullman as medical director of its Chemical Dependency Unit and is now offering inpatient detoxification for alcoholics and drug addicts, hospital spokeswoman Karen Plyler said Thursday.

Kullman, a family practice doctor in Santa Fe for 22 years, was hired part time in December to run the unit, which also offers outpatient counseling four nights a week.

Before Kullman's hiring, the 268-bed hospital would not accept alcoholics or drug addicts for detoxification unless they had some other underlying medical or psychiatric problem. …
