City Council May Take Stand on Death Penalty.

Santa Fe city lawmakers will soon take up a symbolic proposal to support the repeal of New Mexico's death penalty, a stance not all of them are happy to consider.

The non-binding resolution, sponsored by City Councilors Frank Montano and Miguel Chavez, is expected to draw attention from local activists on an already-heated issue. The state Legislature is expected to consider repealing the death penalty this year.

"The next execution, if it's carried out, will take place in Santa Fe," said political activist Jerilou Hammett, who urged Montano to carry the resolution. "That puts Santa Fe in the center of it."
