Firm Fined for Delay In Ramp Openings.(Metropolitan)

Two ramps connecting northbound Interstate 25 traffic with Interstate 40 failed to open in time for the Thursday morning rush hour, forcing some early-bird commuters to get off the interstate if they wanted to go east or west.

Highway Supply, an Albuquerque-based firm, has agreed to pay a $5,500 fine for failing to open the ramps by 5:30 a.m., said Steve Harris, Albuquerque-area engineer for the New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department.

"Someone just dropped the ball on this one," Harris said. "We've had discussions with the firm, and I'm confident this won't happen again."

Steve Clark, project manager for Highway Supply, said the firm failed to schedule enough workers. …
