The new Urban-County Charter Commission was scheduled to begin its work this week, but some East Mountains residents got a head start.

The charter commission is a 13-member panel charged with developing a charter for a new Bernalillo County government. It was created after New Mexico voters passed a Constitutional amendment in November clearing the way for an urban county government and a possible merger with the city of Albuquerque.

East Mountains folks have long been wary about the prospect of a consolidated city/county government. …
