Three-Year Grant Diversifies Program

Before Erin Connor-Lopez made the drive from Albuquerque to Bernalillo each morning for work as an elementary school counselor, she had two stops to make.

Daughter Lauren, 4, went to a Christian preschool while her sister Lindsay, 2 1/2, went to an in-home child-care provider.

"It made it a challenge in the morning," Connor-Lopez said.

If there was a problem or someone was sick, grandparents might have to be called in from Las Vegas, N.M., to babysit.

But when Bernalillo Public Schools opened its Even Start Family Literacy child-care program to Roosevelt staff last month, Connor-Lopez was among the first to sign up.

Now, Connor-Lopez just brings her children with her to work each day. …
