This new year will bring new faces to the top positions in at least two area school districts.

Estancia Superintendent Carolyn Allen-Renteria announced at Tuesday night's school board meeting that she will retire after the current school year. That news comes on the heels of a similar decision last month by Moriarty Superintendent Elna Stowe.

Allen-Renteria will end a 17-year career at the Estancia schools, 13 of them as superintendent. Her time at the helm was defined by remarkable growth in the district, both in terms of enrollment and district facilities.

The Estancia student population grew by nearly 70 percent in the 1990s, and the district had to work long and hard to keep pace. …
