Farms' Revenues Top $29 Million.

Torrance County ranked 15th out of the state's 33 counties in overall agricultural production in 1999, according to an annual government report on production levels.

Scattered throughout the Estancia Valley are 473 farms covering about 16,832 acres, producing crops ranging from corn and hay to beans and pumpkins.

During the 1940s, Torrance County was principally a farming area, a major producer of pinto beans. A subsequent drought devastated the county, and now cattle are the chief agricultural product.
