APD Veteran Begins 2-Month Transition

John Walsh doesn't like to be called chief.

Not yet, anyway.

Walsh was hired by the city of Moriarty in December to take over as the head of its police department on Jan. 1. But Walsh said he really won't become chief until March 1.

He said he wants to take two months to talk to officers, community leaders and residents to get a sense of what is expected from the department and its role in the community.

"Basically, we'll be in a transition period for the next 60 days," Walsh said.

After March 1, Walsh said he will begin his true tenure as police chief, a job he said he intends to keep for a while. …
