County Treasurer Sued To Get Matching Percentage

Mora County commissioners were ordered by a state district judge Wednesday to give the Mora County treasurer an increase of at least $9,000 in his annual salary, a move one county commissioner says will require lay-offs of county employees.

The order was the result of a petition filed in late December by County Treasurer Vicente Duran in an effort to bring his $23,000 annual pay to the same level as the county's sheriff and assessor.

They receive more than $33,000 annually, according to Duran's petition. In 1998 the County Commission, appropriately under state law, raised those salaries when the election terms for those offices were expiring. …
