Inspector Says Span Is Safe

A bridge on N.M. 63 between Rowe and Pecos scored low on inspection reports in 1999 and 2000, supplying more fuel for a debate over replacement of the bridge and reconstruction of a three-mile stretch of the road.

"(The reports) essentially go to reflect the urgency of making the project a reality," said Robert Garcia, a design engineer in charge of the project at the state Highway and Transportation Department.

The 47-year-old structure, known as Bridge No. 400, is "critical and comatose," according to Garcia.

He plans to present the bridge's annual history of "sufficiency" reports an overall measure based on a structure's safety, serviceability and public use to a group of engineers looking at N. …
