Bataan Death March Survivor Earned Respect as N.M. Lawman.(New Mexico)(Obituary)

Former U.S. marshal and Eddy County Sheriff Jack Rupe, a Bataan Death March survivor, was known as a soft-spoken, honest, respected law enforcement officer.

Rupe died of emphysema Monday in Carlsbad. He was 79.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church, 112 N. Alameda in Carlsbad.

Eddy County Sheriff Kent Waller said Rupe was most known for his integrity.

"He lived his way of life," Waller said. "It's what he taught his children. The way he treated other people was the way he wanted to be treated. He was mainly quiet. But when he spoke, you listened because he'd been through a lot in his life. …
