Councilor Comes Under Fire for Uniform Proposal.

Albuquerque administrators again accused Councilor Greg Payne of meddling in union contract negotiations, this time by sponsoring a bill directing the city to pay for police uniforms.

The bill could prompt firefighters to postpone approval of a new contract as they await the outcome of Payne's bill, said Lawrence Rael, the city's chief administrative officer. Payne's effort also could prompt other unions to demand similar benefits, he said.

"As long as the bill is out there, I don't believe the firefighters' union is going to want to negotiate or settle on a contract," Rael said Tuesday.

The council's finance committee on Monday granted a two-week deferral for the bill. …
