Unexcused Designation Eliminated

A new attendance policy at La Cueva High School will end the distinction between excused and unexcused absences.

The change is an attempt to lighten some of the paperwork load on teachers while beefing up enforcement of an Albuquerque Public Schools policy that limits students to 10 absences from any class, said Cathy Bruner, assistant principal at La Cueva.

Parents used to have four days to notify the school of a reason for their child's absence, she said. That meant that a teacher had to check daily to determine whether to give the student a chance to make up missed work. …
