SANTA FE A federal report has identified 295 Spanish or Mexican land grants in New Mexico as a first step toward untangling the complicated history of grants supposedly protected under the treaty ending the Mexican War.

"Many persons, including grantee heirs, scholars and legal experts, still claim that the United States did not protect the property of Mexican-Americans and their descendants (in New Mexico), particularly the common lands of community land grants," stated the report issued Wednesday by the General Accounting Office, Congress' investigative branch.
