* Mayor wants to trim from bus, substation funds to pay for police, jail overspending

A budget battle looms Monday when members of the Albuquerque City Council will consider a plan to pay higher-than-expected law enforcement costs by cutting programs cherished by councilors.

Mayor Jim Baca's proposal would cut $1 million from a fund to pay for police mini-substations and nearly $1 million to buy midsized buses. The savings would help cover police and jail overspending.

The proposals are part of a mid-year budget "clean-up" bill scheduled for consideration by councilors on Monday. The bill is intended to shift money in the budget to reflect actual spending by departments. …
