Jail Didn't Meet Population Cap for 2 Months.(Metro & New Mexico)

Director Says Inmate Number Below Limit

After pruning its inmate population to less than 586 at the end of October, the Bernalillo County Detention Center for the past two months has failed to meet a court-ordered population cap set for the Downtown jail, according to jail reports recently provided to the Metropolitan Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.

But jail director John Dantis said the inmate level continues to hover below or near the specified limit, and progress continues to be made in reducing the jail population.

"This month, as a matter of fact, we're below the number," Dantis said. As of Wednesday morning, 551 people were being housed at the Downtown jail, he said. …
