* Potential 'weapon of choice' clears first testing hurdle at White Sands

A new Air Force stealth missile hit an earthbound target in its first developmental test at White Sands Missile Range last week, and developers say it could become the "weapon of choice" for U.S. bombers in a few years.

On Friday, an F-16 flying out of Holloman Air Force Base launched the "Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile" JASSM for short from 15,000 feet at a cluster of stacked containers at White Sands.

The self-guided cruise missile flew about 70 miles, reaching three navigational markers, before hitting its target.

The launch was the first in a series of eight developmental tests in which the missile tries to hit a target. …
