Young Researchers Tackle Space Race, Fads, Religion.(Schools)

Is cannibalism wrong? Is genetic engineering morally right? Why are the dinosaurs extinct?

Those are among the questions students in Mimi Neamen's honors humanities class at East Mountain High School will attempt to answer by the end of this semester.

On Jan. 12, students at the charter school began working with parent volunteers on a semesterlong research assignment that Neamen has dubbed an "inquiry project."

"They are learning the art of research," Neamen said.

Each student chose a question and will spend the next few months trying to answer it by doing independent research.

Among the topics students are researching are the space race, religion, social fads and discrimination. …
