Graduation Rates Rise in Districts

The Belen and Los Lunas school districts received mixed results in the state's annual accountability report, with both schools showing improvements in some areas while falling behind in others.

The accountability report, which was released last week, compares all 89 of New Mexico's school districts in areas such as standardized testing, graduation rates and dropout rates.

Both districts showed marked increases in graduation rates.

Belen, which was given a ranking of 88th for the 1997-1998 school year when 77.7 percent of its seniors graduated, earned a rating of 22nd highest in the state for the 1999-2000 school year when 97.6 percent of its seniors graduated.

"We have been trying really hard to provide whatever it is the kids' need to graduate," said Christina Wright, Belen Consolidated Schools' director of instruction and curriculum. …
