N.M. not immune to layoff trends.

* Department of Labor's quick response finds jobs for victims of trucking company's closure

New Mexico reflected the national economic slowdown that ushered in the new year with three major layoffs in the state so far.

Fortunately, one of them has already been mitigated by the Department of Labor.

Chicago-based Montgomery Ward, Albuquerque's Roadrunner Trucking Inc. and Roswell bus manufacturer Nova Bus Inc. announced either closures or layoffs.

Montgomery Ward was the first casualty, announcing its demise nationally, ending 128 years as an American retail institution. More than 200 workers will be out of work here when the doors close, expected in March. The retailer contacted the Department of Labor Jan. 12 to help process unemployment claims.

Next, national trucking firm Roadrunner Trucking Inc. reached the end of the road, blaming spikes in fuel costs last year that it could not pass on to clients. …
