Women Take Helm of Boys Teams.(Sports)

* Female coaches say they're confident in coaching roles

Tara Warrior is thought to be the first woman in Albuquerque Public Schools to coach an exclusively boys program. The first, not the last.

But the 37-year-old Warrior, who coaches the Cibola High School boys track team, wonders what the fuss is all about.

"I figured this had happened a long time ago," the affable Warrior said, shrugging her shoulders. "It's no biggie to me, or to them."

Although it is difficult to document with any real precision, longtime APS athletic specialist Buddy Robertson, one of the foremost authorities on high school sports in the Albuquerque area, said he doesn't believe there has been another woman coaching a boys sport.

Which makes Warrior, despite her unruffled attitude toward the whole thing, unique whether she thinks of herself that way or not.

"You see people like Tara, and what's concerning is there aren't many young females applying to coach," said Cibola girls track coach Doug Dorame. …
