The story behind the success of Collective Soul is not the usual one.

The Georgia-based band, which exploded onto the mainstream rock scene in 1994 with the single "Shine," is basically the brainchild of vocalist/guitarist Ed Roland.

Roland grew up in a strict religious family without access to secular music. He still managed to develop an affinity for music and was accepted at Boston's Berklee College of Music.

After running out of money, he returned to his hometown of Stockbridge, Ga., to work in a 24-track recording studio, where he taught himself production technique and formed the first incarnation of Collective Soul. …
