* The advertised Northern New Mexican fare is OK for out-of-towners

If I were a tourist, I might think El Comedor was just fine. But I'm not. And I know better.

Sandwiched between McDonald's and the Santa Fe Budget Inn on Cerrillos, El Comedor serves primarily out-of-towners staying at the motel, plus a few local families. The advertised Northern New Mexican fare pales when compared to the likes of La Choza or La Bell's Carry-Out.

My fiance and I knew we were in a different sphere when a big-haired woman behind us asked in a Lone Star accent, "What's a soap-uh-PEA-er?"

We appreciated our waitress's candid warning that the "wine margaritas are not very good. …
