Later Tax Deadline Falls at Bad Time, Accountant Says.

Don't let those nine extra months the Internal Revenue Service gave you sneak by without setting aside your year 2000 tax payment, a Santa Fe accountant warned Thursday.

The nine-month extension for anyone living within 21 New Mexico counties, including Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Mora and Taos, to file their federal tax returns could present a hardship to small business owners and the self-employed, said accountant David Pease of Pease Accounting Services, Santa Fe.

"They'll be making a large payment Jan. 16 when for most people cash flow is low," Pease said. The IRS, he said, "is setting up the possibility where most people are unable to pay. …
